How to Always Open Notepad as Administrator in Windows 11

If you often edit system files, host files, or configuration files on Windows 11, you may need to run Notepad as administrator. Normally, you have to right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator every single time. This can be annoying if you need it frequently.

In this guide, I will show you how to set Notepad to always open as administrator in Windows 11. This method is safe, simple, and does not require any extra software.

Step 1: Open the Start Menu

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. Type Notepad.
  3. Do not open it yet.

Step 2: Open File Location (for notepad.exe)

  1. Right-click the Notepad icon in the search results.
  2. Select Open file location.
You will see notepad.exe (the executable file), not a shortcut.

Step 3: Open Properties for notepad.exe

  1. Right-click notepad.exe.
  2. Choose Properties.

Step 4: Set to Always Run as Administrator (Compatibility Tab)

  1. In the Properties window, go to the Compatibility tab.
  2. Check the box that says Run this program as an administrator.
  3. Click Apply, then OK.

Step 5: Test Notepad

  1. Close all open Notepad windows.

How to Undo This Setting

If you no longer want Notepad to run as administrator:
  1. Go back to notepad.exe Properties.
  2. Go to the Compatibility tab.
  3. Uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
  4. Save the changes.

Important Notes
